Green Valley Country Club
About
A demanding, water-heavy Robert Trent Jones Jr design
Despite its convenient location near Bangkok’s Suvanabhumi International Airport, the Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed Green Valley Country Club Golf Course enjoys a beautiful countryside setting covered with mature trees and shrubs. With water flanking most fairways, accuracy off the tee is a must, while fast, undulating greens, tricky pin positions and plenty of bunkering combine to create a demanding challenge.
There are some very challenging holes, including some long water carries on the opening holes of each nine. The undulating fairways mean that you are often playing from an uneven lie, and some of the greens are hidden behind large mounds and guarded by strategically placed bunkers.
The challenges begins as early as the second hole, a long par 5 with water all along the left side and fairway bunkers to the right, while the next par-5, the 5th, involves flirting with water to the right and taking on a brace approach over a lake.
Another water carry is required at the short par-3 that follows, while the par-4 8th requires two solid blows to get on in two, with the shortest route is guarded by a series of bunkers. The front nine ends with a classic risk and reward hole, where you need to get as close as you can to the bunker on the left side of the fairway to avoid leaving an over-long approach over water.
There's no let up at the start of the back nine, the 10th a very tough par 4 with a huge bunker protecting the left side of the fairway and another array of deep greenside bunkers to negotiate. The two holes that follow both require carries over a lake, and the tough closing stretch has yet more water in play before another brutish par-5 brings proceedings to a close.
There 18th features water on the left and bunkers on the right off tee, followed by water on the right and bunkers on the left on your second. Get all that right and you're still left with a tricky approach to a green that sits right on the lake edge.
While you may end up losing more golf balls than you would have liked, the very comfortable clubhouse is an ideal place to drown your sorrows in relaxing, opulent surroundings. If a nice cold beer isn't for you, then head for the Jacuzzi or maybe a Thai massage can do a similar job.
