Uniland Golf & Country Club
About
Enjoyable water-heavy course in peaceful surroundings
Uniland Golf & Resort is located in Nakom Prathom province around 90 minutes west of Bangkok. A frequent host of local junior and professional Thai golf tournaments, the 27-hole layout (made up of three nines, A, B and C) features mostly flat terrain with some gentle mounding and numerous water hazards. While the greens are generally very quick and a point of pride at the club, the fairways, tees and rough can get untidy at certain times of the year.
Course A, like all three nines, is fairly water-heavy, with very few holes offering respite from the risk of a watery grave. Forced water carries at the last three holes are as tough as it gets though. Perhaps the pick of the holes is the par-4 7th, which is 336 yards long and involves a 180 yard carry over a lake and a blind shot to the green. Yes, the flag will be visible but the green will be out of sight, making this hole a real test.
Water is in play on literally every hole of Course B, and with three proper dog-legs to negotiate, you've got to be on your game to score well, especially at the 8th a par-5, 641-yard monster that's one of the longest holes in Thailand. A dog-leg left with water both sides and a forced carry into a green with a pair of bunkers either side, it's an achievement to make par.
Course C offers slightly more mountainous terrain, with trees and bunkers also present throughout the course. Although there's still plenty of water about, there's only one forced carry, at the short par-3 4th. The greens are undulating and approach shots need to be precise to avoid rolling off into the fringe or worse.
The par-5 5th is probably the pick of the holes, dog-legging left and right with water both sides and almost begging you to try to cut the second dog-leg and reach the green in two. For most of us, playing around is the better option.
There is a large club house features modern locker rooms and all the amenities you might need, and there's a reasonable on-site resort if you want to stay overnight (although it's probably better to stay in Bangkok or Hua Hin).
While by no means Bangkok's best course, the 27 holes of Uniland Golf & Country Club offer an enjoyable challenge in peaceful surroundings that offer a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.
